5 Ways to Create a Calmer, Peaceful Home
Creating spaces in your home that are functional for daily routines but incorporate what you are most passionate about is vital. Your home is your sanctuary, and if it doesn't feel that way right now, here are five easy ways to create a calm and peaceful home.
One of my core values within my interior design business is always to cultivate calm and beautiful spaces. In today's hectic world, we have so many chaotic situations and stressful factors that we cannot always control. But where you begin and end your day, your living space should not contribute to that stress! Creating spaces in your home that are functional for daily routines but incorporate what you are most passionate about is vital. Your home is your sanctuary, and if it doesn't feel that way right now, here are five easy ways to create a calm and peaceful home.
1. Create a Space for Stress Relieving Activities
One of the biggest challenges is that we all get too busy to set aside time to do the activities we love. Making a space intended specifically to practice our stress-soothing habits serves as a physical reminder and helps us maintain the motivation to keep these habits alive!
I have a cozy corner in my bedroom that I designed for myself individually to practice yoga every day. As a mother, wife, and business owner, it's very easy to lose sight of what makes me happy. By having this space in my bedroom, I see it every day when I wake up and go to sleep, so it motivates me to take a little time for myself.
Take a minute to think about what you're most passionate about? What are your favorite hobbies? What helps you calm down and find peace? Whatever the answer is, use that as your inspiration to make a space in your home to practice it. These are all questions I ask each client during my initial consult, and whether the answer is practicing yoga, reading a book, or playing golf, I make it happen. We all need a little "me time" to help ourselves relax, reset, and recharge, so just make it a part of your home décor.
2. Less is More
Set aside the time to have a purge party! Yes, literally purge, donate or throw away all the excess things in your home that you do not need. Having clutter in your home produces physical and unconscious chaos. By having more stuff in your house, you’re unknowingly creating more stress for yourself. Get rid of all of the extra things you don't need and can comfortably live without. Make a change to declutter your life and practice being a modern minimalist.
3. Organization is KEY
Now I know getting organized can be a task in itself but start small. One quick and easy thing to do when organizing your home is to use some pre-made tools. Pick one or two styles, for example, baskets and all-white boxes to use throughout your home to store different things. I also like to use drawer dividers in my kitchen and my bathrooms, so everything is visible and easy to find. Organizing helps you quickly find the things you need and have a place to put everything, so the clean-up time goes way very quickly. Try picking a color scheme or theme that will help you feel relaxed and revitalized.
4. Ignite Your Scents
Incorporate aromatherapy into the elements of creating a peaceful home. There is research that shows there are real stress-relief benefits to using aromatherapy. Aromatherapy is a trending topic these days, making it easy to find great products that produce a lovely, soothing scent to your home. By using oil diffusers in different rooms, you can subtly offer passive stress relief. I use lavender essential oil in my daughter's room and my bedroom to help instantly calm the senses to get a good night's sleep.
5. Music Sets the Mood
Music is another wonderful easy tool you can use to relieve stress. Similar to aromatherapy, different types and genres of music can calm you down or hype you up. I like to create different playlists for different moods and play them on my Sonos speaker throughout my home. Use music to contribute to a peaceful home environment; it's a great way to relieve stress and set the mood with little to no effort.
