Setting the Tone with 3 Key Elements

This week, we want to share the three main elements we love to use in achieving the perfect tone-on-tone palettes that bring your home a sense of cohesion. In our blog on Designing with Cohesiveness, we discuss the importance of cohesion through color. The key to any space is keeping a consistent color scheme.

1. Choose Your Base Color

Start with the basics and decide what color you wish you keep a constant in your space. For us, we love using white as our base and layer on top of it. White is the perfect canvas for any tone-on-tone design. It creates endless possibilities due to its neutral hue allowing one to pair soft colors and tones like greys, taupes, or blacks to it while keeping the space light and airy.

2. Layering with Textures for Depth

Be sure to add depth to your spaces by layering textures to create visual interest. This could be a couple of accent pillows, a throw, art, accessories, or greenery. Pick one color other than your base and use different shades of the same color, sprinkling it throughout each room when possible. This technique keeps your scheme simple and consistent, creating a tone-on-tone design.

For example, in this Highland Beach, Florida interior design project located in South Florida, we took our base color, white, and scattered shades of cashmere blue throughout. Soft and subtle this hue promotes calmness and connects us with the ocean, perfect for this beachfront property.

3. Selecting the Ideal Materials

We know that working with the color white can be daunting for some clients because it

poses the question, "How will I keep it clean?." A fair question… but do not fret because as

design trends change, so do the quality of fabrics. Always make sure to select upholstery that

is made with performance fabrics. These fabrics are designed to be easy to clean and withstand

the wear and tear of everyday life. Simple stains will come out with a little mild soap and water,

blotting with a white towel. Performance fabrics are also resistant to abrasion over the long term, so don’t be afraid to go ahead and buy that white sofa!
