Designing with Wellness in Mind

Designing with Wellness in Mind

Design is often thought of as a purely aesthetic process. For most, when it comes to home design, there is a primary focus on "how things will look." While creating beautiful spaces is always my goal, I look at each design as a holistic experience, considering the visual aspects and how design elements can make you feel.

Throughout my years as an interior designer, I've carefully researched items known to have benefits of health and wellness, both physical and emotional. I'm thrilled when my clients are eager to incorporate these into their homes, and today, I'm sharing a few of my favorites with you.

Aromatherapy

There is no better feeling than walking into your home after a long day and inhaling your favorite scent. Paired with a serene home design, aromatherapy is sure to lift the mood and instantly reduce stress. There are plenty of ways to add fragrance to your home. My favorite is using essential oil diffusers with scents like lavender or citrus. Diffusers disperse natural oils into the air, freshening up a room and reducing feelings of anxiety.

Plants that Purify

The right accessories can elevate your design to the next level, and some of my favorite accessories are the natural variety - plants. Plants aren't just aesthetically beautiful -- they work hard to clean our air of toxins and release humidity back into the atmosphere.

Sound as Therapy

Sound healing therapy uses aspects of music to improve physical and emotional health. It's a simple way to restore your balance and well-being.

I often recommend installing Sonos speakers because you can stream music from any source to any room in your home. Imagine enjoying your favorite song or even the relaxing sounds of rain or ocean waves throughout your house.

Incorporating Crystals

Crystals are not only pleasing to the eye, but they are also thought to promote physical, emotional, and spiritual healing. Crystals supposedly do this by positively interacting with your body's energy field or chakra.

While some crystals are said to alleviate stress, others are thought to improve concentration or creativity. I love accessorizing with one or more beautiful crystals, as they always bring a feeling of zen into any space.

Elements of Water and Fire

In outdoor living space designs, I like to incorporate the elements of "water and fire." By using these two opposing elements, I can bring a sense of balance to the space. For example, to play off a luxury spa installation, I propose using a beautiful fire pit to juxtapose the water feature. The relaxing benefits may be subconscious or subtle, but there is always a benefit to weaving these two elements into a stunning design.

Lifestyle Note: Invest in your home. Surround yourself with scents, colors, sounds, and elements that nourish your wellbeing.

When you walk into a nourishing home, it is like walking into a hug. A space of solitude and comfort. I create this feeling in my home through aromatherapy and music. There is not a day that goes by where I am not diffusing my favorite scent or indulging in my newest playlist. These simple additions bring an aspect of wellness into my home and nourish my family.
